Kennedy Space Center, on Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, near Cape Canaveral, Florida, is the headquarters of NASA's launch operations. It is about 50 miles from Orlando. While at the Kennedy Space Center, you can step inside a replica of the International Space Station, see a Saturn V rocket, and see two shuttle launch pads from a 60 foot high observation deck. You can meet a veteran NASA astronaut in person at Astronaut Encounter, have lunch with an astronaut and see astronauts' artifacts and personal mementos at the U.S. Astronaut Hall of Fame.
Visitors to the Apollo Treasure Gallery can see spacesuits and other equipment that were used by the Apollo astronauts when they travelled to the Moon. The Early Space exhibit facility has artificacts from the Mercury and Gemini space programs. You and your family can enjoy multimedia presentations and interactive experiences at Exploration Space. Films with footage taken by astronauts while in space can be seen at the Kennedy Space Center's two IMAX theatres. Small children can play in the Children's Play Dome, where they will be able to blast off in spaceships and climb walls made of moon rocks. Depending on the when you visit, you might even be able to witness a live space shuttle launch or rocket launch. |
